Mirage M3 Lee kit # 72801

Mirage M3 “Lee”  #72801

This recently introduced kit from Mirage is a completely new kit and is the best M3 on the market today. The kit scales out to almost exactly 1/72nd scale. Detail is excellent and the kit can be built oob with no moifications needed.

I really cannot give this kit enough praise. It even appears to have to correct number of rivets in couple of places I counted! (and no, I’m definately NOT a rivet counter!!!)

This kit includes 2 options for the main gun, the later long barrel version plus the earlier short barrel along with the optional counterweight. Also the side crew hatches are molded separately so they can be positioned open, or blanked off for a later version. The drivers hatch is molded as another separate piece and could, with a little cutting on the front hull assembly, be positioned open. The cupola is nicely done and can be constructed with the commanders hatch open.

The bogie assemblies are superb! These represent the early VVSS suspension used on the M3 series as well as the early M4 series medium tanks. I have heard that Mirage is planning a new M4 series of tanks. Hopefully they will include this early VVSS suspension in at least one of their kits. The wheels provided are the correct open spoke type and appear to be very well done. The transmission housing is the early 3 piece type with the pieces for the flanges molded separately. The flanges have excellent detail. Also included is a set of photo etched accessories. These include the interior to the crew doors, light guards and the engine deck screen. Decals are included for 6 versions.

The tracks, while being the vinyl, “rubber band” type, are nicely done. This is the only drawback to the whole kit that I can see. Since the price is up there, I feel that Mirage should have gone the extra distance and provided hard plastic tracks along with the soft ones. I personally prefer the hard plastic tracks but I realize that there are many that don’t.

Overall I feel that this is one of the best kits on the market today and as such, highly recommend it.
